HYDERABAD: The very first batch of Agniveers have begun training at the Artillery Centre in Hyderabad, inching a step better to joining the Indian Army.
Of the 40,000 prospects inducted as Agniveers throughout India, about 5,500 will be trained at the citys Artillery Centre - one of the largest in the country - in two batches, using simulators and automation.
They will be put through a robust course structure and have access to modern centers at the Centre in Golconda.
I feel lucky and proud to be part of the very first batch of Agniveers, said M Naveen Kumar, from Anakapalli in Andhra Pradesh, when TOI caught up with him at the training school, on Monday.
Child of farmer, a beaming Naveen said that its always been his dream to serve in the Indian Army.
Such stories of enthusiasm are aplenty among the 2,200 Angiveers who started their 31-week training from January 1.
During the very first leg of their training, the boys will be introduced to fundamental military operations.
The course includes basics of cyber security, shooting, communications, to name a few subjects.
The second batch of Agniveers - about 3,300 of them - will begin reporting from mid-February.
The training will begin from March 1.
Brigadier Rajiv Chauhan, Commandant of the Artillery Centre, said: We are fully prepared to train these boys.
The programme is developed systematically to accomplish the objective of smooth combination of completely trained Agniveers into artillery units.
He said that innovative technology will play a crucial function in training Agniveers.
It is very important for us to change our curriculum to cater to the tech-savvy youth.
It will likewise make the entire training procedure more efficient.
Right from Day 1, Agniveers will be assessed continuously and 25% of them will be kept by the Army at the end of a four-year period.
The remaining will be alleviated.
