MUMBAI: Addressing press conference after joining the Shinde government, Ajit Pawar staked claim to the NCP party and its symbol.

"The NCP has decided to join the government.

All MLAs and MPs are with us and there is no need to discuss numbers," he said.

He said all future polls would be fought in alliance with BJP and Shiv Sena.

"Don't worry, We are the NCP...

We will contest all future polls under the NCP name and symbol," he said.

He was flanked by ex-Union minister Praful Patel and ex-deputy CM Chhagan Bhujbal who had appealed to Sharad Pawar not to quit as NCP chief in May.Ajit said that he had resigned as the leader of opposition in the assembly on Friday.

"I had made my stand clear on the party's foundation day." At the event, Ajit had said he wanted to step down from the post in favour of a position within the party, viewed as a signal that he was not happy.‘If we can go with Shiv Sena, we can go with BJP’Ajit Pawar said they took the step for the good of the state and the country.

“The Prime Minister is working for development.

India needs a strong leadership.

There has been no real output in the meetings of the opposition parties,” he said in his first press conference after joining the Shinde government.

On joining hands with the Bharatiya Janata Party, Ajit Pawar said, “To those who accuse us of communalism, I say if we could join the Shiv Sena as part of MVA, then we can join BJP.” He also said that in Nagaland, NCP MLAs who had won the polls ended up supporting BJP to form the government.

Defending his switchover, Ajit said, “There is no need to respond to criticism.

We will work for development and for the public.” Ajit said the new ministers represented different sections of society, including OBCs and tribals.

“There will soon be an expansion to give younger people a chance,” he said.

Meanwhile, Bhujbal said, “I want to clear a misunderstanding.

We have not left the NCP.

The NCP has joined the government.” Bhujbal dismissed reports that the nine ministers sworn in on Sunday had joined the Shinde-Fadnavis government to scuttle cases against them by the Central agencies.

“The case against Ajit Pawar has been made nil.

The important case against me is over.

There are no cases against Dilip Walse Patil, Aditi Tatkare and so on.” When asked about the ED case against MLA Hasan Mushrif, Bhujbal said, “The court keeps pushing the date forward because nothing concrete has been found against him.” The OBC leader, who had once split Bal Thackeray’s party to join the NCP, made the claim that Sharad Pawar himself had told him that Modi would become PM in 2024.

Elections to the 288-member Maharashtra assembly are also due next year.

After the 2019 assembly polls, the Uddhav Thackerayled Shiv Sena had snapped ties with BJP.

Before the MVA government comprising Sena, NCP and Congress could be formed, Fadnavis and Ajit were sworn in as CM and deputy CM respectively in a hush-hush early-morning ceremony, but their government lasted only 80 hours.
