NEW DELHI: Union road transport minister Nitin Gadkari on Tuesday said that the government doesn't want to make six airbags mandatory for all cars.
The minister made this surprising remarks, a departure from his earlier stand to make the six airbag provision mandatory.
"Now people are cautious.
Whatever models have six air bags, people may prefer to take that car.
It’s up to the manufacturers and people to decide...We don't want to make six airbags rule for cars mandatory," Gadkari said at an event here.He also said while all carmakers are on board for six airbags, only one firm has reservation.
He did not name the company.
The minister said with the new crash test norms -- Bharat NCAP -- coming into force from October this year, cars with more safety features will get higher star rating and get more buyers. The government last year proposed to implement the six airbags safety norm from October 2023 for enhanced safety of occupants.
But the draft notification had lapsed.
The road transport ministry in a statement had said that in order to enhance the safety of occupants of a motor vehicle, it has been decided to enhance safety features by amending the Central Motors Vehicles Rules.
Airbags for both front seats are mandatory in cars manufactured on and after April 1, 2021.
An airbag is a vehicle occupant-restraint system which interferes between the driver and the vehicle's dashboard during a collision, thereby preventing serious injuries.Meanwhile, sources in road transport ministry said the proposal for six airbags is under "active consideration".
